Chevrolet SS performance sedan officially announced

Chevrolet officially announced today that it will launch a V8 powered, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan in the United States and that the new of the new car will be Chevrolet SS. The SS will also make its debut as the next NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar and will hit the racetrack at the 2013 Daytona 500. The Chevrolet SS will hit the showrooms in late 2013 as a 2014 model and according to the press release it will be first rear-wheel-drive sedan for sale in the United States since 1995. The SS designation made its debut back in 1957 on a Corvette prototype race car built under the guidance of Zora Arkus-Duntov with the plan to enter it in the Le Mans 24-hour race.
After this, the first production vehicle offered with an SS option was the 1961 Impala and Chevrolet built 453 units, each featuring performance upgrades which included a modified chassis and suspension, power brakes, a steering column mounted tachometer and unique wheels and tires. The latest model featuring the SS bagde was the fifth-generation Camaro. The new SS will be a derivative of the rear-wheel-drive architecture that spawns performance vehicles like Chevrolet Camaro and Holden's upcoming VF Commodore.
